The opera follows the story of the first Klingon Emperor Kahless the Unforgettable as he battles his brother Morath following the death of their father, slays the tyrant Molor and wins the love of the Lady Lukara. (All of which was mentioned through various Star Trek episodes.)
While it might be easy to dismiss this as some sort of convention skit, they’ve put an impressive amount of effort into it, including getting Marc Okrand, creator of the Klingon language, to work on the libretto. They’ve also been touring the world with the production for the last two years while developing it, including being part of the artist-in-residence program of Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in New York. Which is a surprising amount of mainstream cred for a bunch of people with fake forheads singing in a made-up language.
Especially when they do crazy nerd things like beaming a message to the fictional Klingon homeworld of Qo’noS with an actual radio telescope. Video of that after the jump!
